Named for Lance Corporal Jeffery Scott Holmes who grew up in White River Junction, Vermont. He attended the Hartford Schools where, besides his academic studies, participated in sports. During his grade school years, Jeff joined the local Civil Air Patrol. He thought he would join the Air Force but decided to enlist in the Marine Corps in 2002 in the Delayed Entry Program.
After graduation in 2003, Jeff left for boot camp training at Parris Island. Upon completion, he was transferred to SOI at Camp LeJeune and assigned to 1st BN, 8th Marines, Bravo Co, 3rd PLT, Unit 73195.
Jeff was deployed to Iraq. His letters home stated how much he thought he was doing the right thing helping other people of another nation and that if he were to die, he would be doing what he felt he was born to do.
On Thanksgiving Day 2004 while clearing houses in Fallujah, Jeff was killed.
Jeff had a great sense of humor and showed kindness and compassion for others. At 15 he began his first job. Jeff’s work ethic was reflected in his devotion to whatever the task may be. Like most teenagers, Jeff had some troubled times, but with the love and support of family, he overcame those obstacles.
American Legion Post 84 was established in memory of Jeff. It is our hope that we aspire to follow his examples of kindness and compassion in serving our community and this nation. We have established Post 84 to be a substance free post in White River Jct., VT. as the first step toward these goals.
We support our local community programs: Vermont Scouting; Dothan Brook School Biography Fair; Boys and Girls state scholarships and we are proud to sponsor a Christmas party for the children at the local homeless shelter.
Military Veterans programs that we support are: the Vermont Veterans Home; the Dodge House; the Hartford Vet Council and the State Commander’s project.
The American Legion is the largest wartime veterans service organization with 2.4 million members in nearly
14,000 posts in nearly every community in America. The Legion, established by an act of Congress in 1919, was
instrumental in getting the original GI Bill through Congress and the creation of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Today, the organization is active throughout the United States, supporting current military personnel and veterans,
sponsoring American Legion Baseball, Boys State, Oratorical Contests and other activities for youth, and pushing for
the adoption of a constitutional amendment to prohibit desecration of the U.S. flag.
